Central Hawke's Bay horse riders will campaign against dangerous road users in the national Ride for Road Safety on Saturday.
Nearly 1000 riders in locations across New Zealand, including Waipukurau, are expected to take part in the inaugural event on May 20.
The ride was created to educate all road users on safe ways to travel around horses on roads following a crash which left journalist Karen Rutherford seriously injured and killed her horse, Curious George, last year.
Waipukurau ride co-ordinator Ashley Jevon-Dalgaard said she hoped nearly 100 people would join her on the local ride to send an important road safety message.
"It's just to raise awareness that people riding horses have got as much right to be on the road as cyclists, walkers and cars.
