Ikaroa Rawhiti Labour MP Meka Whaitiri has welcomed aspects of the Havelock North Water Inquiry's findings on last year's gastro outbreak, but questions the lack of certainty over the cause of the outbreak.
The inquiry found that the outbreak was linked to heavy rain that led to water contaminated by sheep faeces entering the Mangateretere pond, then drawn up through Brookvale Bore 1.
It also noted that contamination may have occurred when contaminated water entered the bore chambers, possibly in a quantity sufficient to overtop the bore head cable holes, and through loose cable seals, travel down the cables into the water supply.
This scenario was regarded as much less likely than the water travelling via the pond, the inquiry report said.
Ms Whaitiri said the lack of certainty as to the exact cause left her with little confidence that the authorities would be able to instigate measures to fix the issue for the future.
