A Flaxmere school and pre-school centre were placed in lockdown for a short time this afternoon as police sought a man who was reported to have threatened to shoot a woman living at an address in the area.

Police were told of the alleged threat about 1pm, and asked staff at Kimi Ora School to keep children indoors while they tried to establish if the man was in the area, and whether he was armed.

The alert at the school was lifted about 2.15pm but police were still looking for the man, who was understood to have not been at the property where the woman was staying.
