The Waikato Interfaith Council (WIFCO) is calling for input from the community as it looks to put Hamilton on the map as a city of compassion.
A public meeting was held this week at the Hamilton Gardens, to introduce the Compassionate City Initiative and present the opportunity for people to get involved.
WIFCO chair Louis Paulussen said the group wanted to break away from the group's religious aspect and put more focus on the initiative which encourages all members of the community to get involved in compassionate projects.
"We didn't think it should be religious-based because it involves everybody," Mr Paulussen said.
"It's an initiative where people in the community get together and recognise compassion and move toward a different type of behaviour toward each other. The aim is for the community as a whole to become more compassionate."
