Waikato Regional Council would consider financial support for a 5.1 ha block Hamilton City Council may consider selling after earlier agreeing to include the block in a natural heritage park's boundary.
Hamilton City Council voted last week 9-4 against the previous council's decision to declare the block part of the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park off Baverstock Rd. It could be put up for sale to developers.
The block, which borders the southeast of the park, sparked a heated debate at a full council meeting on January 30.
Waikato Regional Council chairwoman Paula Southgate said she met mayor Julie Hardaker last year to discuss several environmental initiatives. The WRC had funds that could provide financial support for the block of land and had funded some tree planting in the park.
"The national heritage fund is available for large-scale regional benefits and I did suggest to the mayor we could explore that. No one has made an application, or advanced that discussion since. If it is a monetary thing, surely we can have that conversation.
