The mix of the old and new at the refurbished Auckland Museum has won a national architecture award.
Institute of Architects judges described the work on the museum by Noel Lane Architects, of Auckland, as "an exemplary example of the creative reinvention of a landmark heritage building and cultural institution."
They commended the architects for the way modern services had been housed in the building while maintaining its neo-classical character.
The judges said the contemporary materials used inside the building provided a pleasing counterpoint to the older structure.
The five-year $43 million project also won the regional heritage and conservation award.
Museum director Dr Rodney Wilson said the awards were confirmation of the project's success.
"We are getting tremendous feedback from visitors.
"The new galleries are spectacular, they're bigger, they're informative, they're hands-on and they are fun," he said.
"We are justifiably proud that they retain the character and atmosphere of this much-loved national cultural icon."
