The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology is putting companies under a microscope to hunt down the best commercial adoptions of innovative technology.
The Wellington-based crown entity yesterday introduced new business awards called Technology Commendations.
They will recognise about five companies each year that have grown and become successful by adopting innovative technology.
Communications manager Patricia Donovan said the foundation hoped the awards would encourage more research and development.
"The level of R&D is very slow and we need to raise the level if we're to catch up," she said.
Any commercial organisation or company with a significant New Zealand presence is eligible to apply for a commendation, as long as it can show the link between its commercial success and the adoption of innovative technology.
Companies can either make an application or be nominated by other businesses or individuals.
Applications for the commendations, which follow the model of Trade NZ's Export Awards, close on May 9, with the winners announced in June.
