A fire engine on its way to a blaze was stopped short by a collision in West Auckland yesterday.
The crash with a car happened at 1.30 pm at the corner of Lincoln Rd and Central Park Drive, as the Waitemata-based appliance was nearing the shed fire on Kingdale Rd.
None of the three people in the car was hurt despite the front being crushed.
The shaken young driver said his $3000 car was uninsured and he was still paying it off after buying it a month ago.
A bystander, who refused to give his name, said he heard a loud bang and was amazed to see the back of the car fly into the air.
The fire engine had only a damaged bumper and mudguard. Traffic was delayed for 30 minutes.
Fire Service spokesman Scott Osmond said the blaze destroyed the shed, and it probably could not have been saved if the fire engine had managed to get there.
He said the service was investigating the crash.
