My second-to-last column proves all good things eventually end.
I think it was Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English literature, who said in 1374, "All good things must come to an end".
He, of course, was right, mainly because all things must end eventually, whether they're good or not. For that is the nature of things. They begin, they continue and then they end. Sadly that is the case with this column. You are reading my second to last column for the Herald.
It has been fun, I must say, to regale you with my thoughts and actions over the past year or so. Here we are now, in my 70th piece. During my time writing for the paper I have tried to keep it interesting, sometimes delving into the weird, as is my taste.
Other times I have kept you, and particularly my mother, up to date with my activities in foreign lands.
Mostly, though, I have simply put to paper whatever is on my mind. There's another old adage, "Write about what you know". I believe Mark Twain coined that one.
I'm also reminded of it frequently as it's the subject of a song by my favourite rap band from Cornwall - Hedluv and Passman.
Their funky ditty entitled Wot u Kno is just one of the many songs they'll be performing live when they return to these shores next month.
I'm proud to announce they'll be supporting me on my national stand-up tour as well as live-scoring my stories on stage. After all, nothing says "adventure" like the preset beats of a Casio keyboard.
I decided to call my show Mr Adventure this year because it suddenly struck me (like a rogue golf ball) that that's what life is about. Since the day I left home at 17 I've been venturing forth and adventuring back, exploring the world and what's in my heart, seeking the answers to the questions I've never asked.
I look at my sons and I wonder what will become of them. They're looking at me and thinking the same thing ... or are they?
No, for the most part they're playing with their toys and screens. Now and again my eldest will ponder his future but it's very rarely about the job he may do. For him it's the experiences and the places he'll go. Theodor Seuss Geisel said it best, oh yes Dr. Seuss, when he wrote Oh The Places You'll Go! in 1990. Somewhat ironically this was to be his last book.
So where did he go ... at the end of his day? Well, in spirit he's still with us in his masterful words:
"Out there things can happen, and frequently do, To people as brainy and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen, don't worry, don't stew. Just go right along, you'll start happening too!"
Mr Adventure and the Cornish rappers will be touring New Zealand from April 11-May 31.
