Mobile provider 2degrees has tweeted that its service is working again.
The company tweeted just after 10pm that they were experiencing "nationwide issues with calls and texts".
"Our teams are working on it at the highest priority."
However, just after 11pm they tweeted that "Calls, SMS and our website are up now. Please accept our apologies for the loss of service & for bearing with us".
On their Facebook page they said anyone still having an issue making calls should switch their handset to flight mode or switch it on and off again.
Users shared their distress at the outage on social media this evening.
Oke Mehana wrote on Facebook: "What the heck #2degrees your stuffing all our phones up I cant text or ring out!!!"
Customers from Dunedin to Waiheke Island to Marlborough complained on social media about the lack of service.
