House of the Year, in Mt Maunganui, ‘exudes luxury with views and sun’.
A luxury Mt Maunganui beachside mansion and a two-year rebuild of an Albany home are the big winners in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Competition.
The builds were celebrated at an awards dinner in Auckland last night.
The 2015 House of the Year title went to MtMaunganui firm Shaw Builders for the beachside property.
Judges described the 419sq m house as a well-designed home that "exudes luxury with views and sun" and featured polished Turkish stone tiling and superb detailing.
The upper-level outdoor area of the three-bedroom, three-bathroom pad could be closed off from prevailing winds with strategically hidden sliding doors and a remote-controlled louvered roof.
"This large, elegant home is well-balanced with a superb palette of materials, and has been designed and built for comfortable living," the judges' notes stated.
Shaw Builders also won the Craftsmanship Award and the Westpac New Home (over $2 million) category for the property.
Auckland company Glover Homes won the supreme award for the Renovation of the Year, for a home in Albany.
The project took two years to complete and at times, up to 12 builders were on site.
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home was designed to meet the owners' needs with a new kitchen and butler's pantry installed in the heart of the open-plan dining room.

"Completing this amazing transformation is extensive decking, some of which is covered with louvre roofing," the judges said.
"The deck is complete with an outdoor sound system and heaters, and flows out to the swimming pool area. All this adds up to an exceptional build by a quality builder."
Mossman Construction won the Master Build Services Renovation Award (up to $250,000) for a home in Palmerston North.
The Resene Sustainable Home Award was won by Hybrid Homes for an energy-efficient home in Nelson.

The supreme, lifestyle and category winners were selected from 100 Gold Reserve national finalists, which were involved in the 11 regional competitions held throughout New Zealand in July and August.
More than 350 entries were submitted during the regional judging section of the competition.
The top 100 homes went forward to the national competition and were re-judged by the panel.
