On behalf of Auckland ratepayers, Waterfront Auckland is responsible for leading the design led revitalisation of the inner city waterfront.
Te Waitemata - "sparkling waters" Tamaki Makaurau, 'the home of a thousand lovers. Auckland City and its water's edge have long been fought over by suitors eager to seize control of this highly valued space. For good reason as waterfronts and harbours are the jewels in the crown of any city and we all have a stake in the future of this treasured space.
I am in awe of the immense natural beauty the Auckland waterfront offers but to really make it great requires considered planning, design and a strategic outlook to harness its true potential. As the Rugby World Cup showed us in 2011, the identity of the Auckland waterfront is changing; we've known its potential as a focal point for events and tourism but with the recent revitalisation of Wynyard Quarter and the re-introduction of Queen's Wharf back to the public, Aucklanders are increasingly engaging more with public spaces in the inner city. The challenge now is to kick on and make the most of the momentum and create a waterfront that leaves the likes of Sydney and San Francisco in its wake, a waterfront we can enjoy now and for generations to come.
