'Private urban oasis' in Tauranga wins House of the Year 2017

A family home in Tauranga South has won the $1m to $2m new build category at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards.

The cedar-and-clay-brick home, built by Belco, has three bedrooms, two bathrooms. two living rooms, two outdoor living spaces, a pool and panoramic views.

Judges described it as a private urban oasis on a tight site that presented special challenges.

Designers made sure every square metre of the 230sq m floor plan was utilised, with joinery maximising the panoramic views while minimising heat loss, and louvres creating an all-weather deck space.

The house also won an award for the outdoor living for its dual outdoor spaces - one off the upstairs formal and main living area and one off the ground floor children's living area.

More than 500 people from the building and construction industry gathered at SkyCity in Auckland on Saturday night to hear who was to be honoured in the awards' 27th year.

An elegant home in Mt Pleasant, Christchurch, took out the top prize at the event, being named Supreme House of the year.

A Wellington home also captured the judges' attention. The Mt Victoria home was chosen for the supreme award for Renovation of the Year.

Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly said the number of top-quality homes and diversity within the range of price categories showed what could be achieved within the country's changing housing market.

"All of the winners and finalists have showcased the wide range of materials and approaches the industry can use to meet the increasing demands of the sector. They are the examples the industry can look to."
