An oven fire in Maungatapu last night turned out to be the result of a bad installation.
The kitchen and dining areas of the house were filled with smoke when firefighters arrived at the house about 7.30pm, Greerton Fire station officer Steve Wright said.
They a found built-in oven sitting directly on a smouldering shelf underneath.
He said there should be at least a 2cm gap between the oven base and the shelf.
Because there was no gap, heat from the oven had nowhere to go but into the wood of the shelf, which would have dried out over several years before catching alight.
