12:18pm: An elderly man is being taken to hospital after a medical event cased him to crash into a parked car.

Acting shift commander Sergeant Tristan Murray said the 85-year-old man had suffered some sort of medical event causing him to collide with a parked car.

He was in a serious condition and was being looked over by St John staff. He will be taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The police serious crash unit were also at the scene.

EARLIER: Police and ambulance are at the scene of a serious crash in Mount Maunganui.

It is understood a person is seriously hurt after a collision involving two cars on Oceanbeach Rd about 11.50pm.

A police spokeswoman said a car driven by and elderly man had hit a parked car about 11.40am.

The crash happened between Concord Rd and Surf Rd.
