Emergency services are working to free two trapped people after a head-on collision between two vehicles on State Highway 2 near Gill Lane, Whakamarama.

Northern Fire Service Communications shift manager Carren Larking said the first 111 call was received at 3.20pm today, and fire crews were trying to free the two people.

Their conditions were described as status two and three - which means not critical.

State Highway 2 has been closed between Bethleham and Katikati and traffic was being diverted down Munro Rd.

Police urged motorists to avoid State Highway 2 and take an alternate route via Hamilton or delay their travel if possible, and to be patient due to delays.
