A winter blast blanketing parts of New Zealand in snow has resulted in one of Tauranga's coldest days so far this year.
Metservice forecast a maximum temperature of 13C at 2pm but this was short lived as the temperature dropped to just 10C by 3pm.
Today's maximum temperature of 13C is the lowest recorded so far this month.
Metservice meterologist Emma Blades said the mean maximum temperature for May on average was 17C.
''But you guys have only had 13C, which is not massively cold but with the winds it makes it feel just a few degrees colder than that. And with the showers as well, when you get showers it always makes it feel colder.''
Although the temperature at 3pm was 10C, it felt like 7C and the Metservice recommended people wear three clothing layers plus 1 windproof layer.
The Western Bay of Plenty was issued a severe gale warning for this morning, with southwesterly wind gusts expected to reach 44km/h.
Temperatures are expected to reach a low of 8C tonight, slightly warmer than the 5C mark reached on May 1.
