Four school girls have organised a disco to raise money for child cancer.
The Tauranga Girls' College students' Year 12 sociology class had a goal of raising funds and awareness for a local organisation, the Child Cancer Foundation.
Tamia Leonard, Hinewai Cousins, Claudia Capener and Kelsey Stringer took the fundraising efforts further and organised a disco for primary school students.
"We did it all ourselves and didn't approach the teachers until we had done all the work," Tamia said. The group was hoping to raise about $500.
"Children deserve a childhood when they are at school. Cancer affects them and their families, they lose a lot of their childhood."
Gilmours had sponsored food, drinks and other items for the disco which would be sold to the children or used as spot prizes.
The girls had also organised adult relatives to volunteer as supervisors for the night.
The rest of the sociology class' 59 students held a market day at the Tauranga Girls' College hall yesterday lunchtime to raise money, teacher Anna Leach said.
Child Cancer Foundation's Delwynne Hahunga said what the girls were doing was inspiring for the future of New Zealand.
The disco will be held at the Gate Pa School hall tonight and tickets have been on sale for $2 at the school.
