Small fires keep brigades busy

Firefighters were kept busy last night dealing with a number of small fires.

Mount Maunganui station was called to put out a smouldering fire in a truck on Waimarie St near the port about 8.30pm yesterday.

A spokesperson said it was a bit of palm kernel oil on the manifold of a front end loader that was smoking.

"It was just a bit of smouldering and some minor flames but nothing major."

Greerton firefighters dealt with two small scrub fires in Pyes Pa.

The first was on Merriman Place about 8.45pm and the second on Cheyne Rd abour 10pm.

The Merriman Place fire was believed to be suspicious.

The Katikati volunteer fire brigade were also called out to deal with a rubbish fire in the gardens on Main Rd about 11.30pm.
