Board game fans Emma and James McFadden are using Kickstarter to help fund a dedicated board game cafe in Grafton.
Emma McFadden says the idea came after the couple visited a similar cafe in Toronto last year.
"It was welcoming, fun, and everyone was having a great time."
To help fund their dream and make the Cakes n Ladders cafe on Symonds Street a reality, the couple has raised nearly raised $8000 using the crowd funding platform Kickstarter.
"We wanted to give Aucklanders the opportunity to collaborate with us, giving them a chance to be a part of Cakes n ladders from the get go. This includes choosing games and coming to our opening party."
A range of rewards are on offer from custom dice and mugs to the opportunity to name a private gaming room.
The couple, from Blockhouse Bay, say that similar cafes are popping up around the world.
"Board game cafes are huge overseas and a couple have popped up recently here including the Caffeinated Dragon in Wellington. "
Emma says she hopes that the cafe will make playing games more accessible by bringing people together and building communities.
She is aiming to open in August.
The Cakes n Ladders cafe will open Wednesday to Friday from 5pm to 10 pm and 10am to 10pm weekends
