Rewarding good driving with "merit points" has received a thumbs up from motorist groups.
Merit points could come under the microscope as part of research commissioned by transport authorities into New Zealand's demerit system, where drivers rack up points for offences such as speeding and using a cell phone.
Drivers who get 100 points within two years can lose their licence for three months.
The research, which the NZ Transport Agency has put a tender out for, could look at other countries' systems, including those that reward clean driving records.
Road safety director Ernst Zollner stopped short of saying the demerit system was not working but admitted improvements were needed.
