Farmer Nick Tripe is about to pull out and burn all the 8000 trees in his Glenfield Pear Orchard near Mangamahu. They were weakened by flooding in the Whangaehu River last year and have a bad case of the bacterial fire blight disease. Closing the orchard means the end of seven full-time equivalent jobs.
