The first Turakina Highland Games were held in 1864 because the Scottish families who had settled in the district wanted to keep the Scottish highland culture alive in their new home. The St Anthony's School medieval fayre is a popular annual event. It began as a school gala in 2012, slowly growing in size and scope over the years. In 2019 it morphed into the medieval fayre as it is today. This year's event took place on February 18.
It was a weekend of activity and Whanganui basked in the sunshine and glory of its heritage.
