Wanganui hosted the 2011 New Zealand Masters Games, which saw athletes from all over New Zealand and abroad stream into the city for their chance at gold.

The St Anthony's School medieval fayre is a popular annual event. It began as a school gala in 2012, slowly growing in size and scope over the years. In 2019 it morphed into the medieval fayre as it is today. This year's event took place on February 18.
