Around sixty Primary principals, teachers and support staff gathered outside Whanganui MP Chester Borrows’ office in Victoria Ave at 7.30am on Friday morning to deliver the their alternative plan to the government’s IES policy. The protest was part of a nationwide effort by NZEI members and educators visited electorate offices around the country to deliver letters supporting an alternative pathway to MPs. As far as rural fire fighters were concerned, a shed fire at Hylton Park was the real deal. But the Saturday afternoon blaze was controlled fire as part of training for the Wanganui Rural Fire Fighters.

Gallery: Puanga in Wanganui 2014

The start of Matariki, or Puanga as it is known in Whanganui, was held on the banks of the Whanganui River yesterday around 6am. About 200 people of all ages, gathered at the Putiki slipway. Trumpets sounded, and prayers were recited by the waterside. A waka carrying a fire and flaming torch slid into the slipway. Paddler Ned Tapa carried the torch up the slipway and lit a second fire. Master of ceremonies Kemp Dryden read the names of people who had died since the last Puanga, and the crowd added others. Mark Lee from the Wanganui Astronomy Society pointed out stars with a laser light. Wanganui Chronicle photographer Bevan Conley took these images of the event.

The Sarjeant Gallery opened its new premises on Taupo Quay a few weeks ago. Sarjeant On The Quay will be the home of the Sarjeant for a few years, while its regular building at Queens Park is renovated and strengthened. Wanganui Chronicle photographer Bevan Conley and reporter Anne-Marie McDonald took a tour of the new building.

Saturday saw the Great Busk Off take place in central Wanganui, with 18 buskers spread out throughout the CBD. Organiser Elise Goodge from Mainstreet Wanganui said it was a great success, and $2200 worth of voting tokens were sold. Nearly 900 Harley-Davidson bikes roared through the Rangitikei on Saturday in 24th National Hog Ride. Sadly for hog lovers in the North Island, it may be the last time the mass Thunder Ride is held in the region as it is being based in Queenstown. APN Print Wanganui will close its Taupo Quay doors for the last time just before Christmas. It’s the oldest commercial printing firm in Wanganui, dating from 1856. APN Print Wanganui has over the years printed the Wanganui Chronicle, as well as the River City Press, the Wairarapa Times-Age, the Horowhenua Chronicle, the City Voice, and a number of university student magazines. Wanganui Chronicle photographer Bevan Conley took his camera for a wander around APN Print Wanganui’s factory, and captured these images.

It's the end of an era for the Wanganui Chronicle. After nearly 25 years at Taupo Quay, from December 1, Wanganui's daily newspaper will be located at 100 Guyton St. This move will be the Wanganui Chronicle's seventh in its 157-year history.
