Ngati Apa settlement

Ngati Apa people gathered at Kauangaroa Marae last weekend to celebrate their Treaty of Waitangi settlement. The day began with a powhiri, and continued with speeches, entertainment, kapa haka, and a feast. The settlement sees Ngati Apa receive an apology from the Crown, along with $16 million in cash, $10 million of forestry land, and $2 million of other land. Wanganui Chronicle photographer STUART MUNRO went along to the celebrations.

Fire destroyed a former chip factory in Rata, near Hunterville, in the early hours of Tuesday, May 3. The shed was being used to store hay and straw and two tractors at the time of the blaze.

Wanganui Ballet, Modern and Tap Dancing Competitions

Little girls with curls, lipstick, beautiful costumes and big smiles danced to win at the Wanganui Ballet, Modern and Tap Dancing Competitions. Wanganui Girls' College hall was filled with mums, grandmas, aunties, cousins, brothers and sisters making up a great support audience for the young performers. Photographer STUART MUNRO took these pictures at the Classical Barefoot - 9 and under 11 event.

Castlecliff Skate Competition

Organised by the the Wanganui District Council's Youth Committee, the Castlecliff Skate Competition attracted around 500 people, not just competitors, but families and other skaters out to soak up the atmosphere. Money raised from the event, about $350, will go to the Ake Ake Centre, a youth centre, to buy new equipment. Photographer Tracey Grant went to watch the action.

Breast cancer horse trek fundraiser

Seventy-two riders mounted up on Saturday to ride in support of a breast cancer fundraiser.

Organised by Carol Rickards, the one-day trek raised about $3500 for the Louise Perkins Foundation's "Sweet Louise" programme, and would be put to use helping women in the Wanganui-Manawatu-Rangitikei-Central Hawke's Bay area. Photographer Tracey Grant tried not to spook the horses when she joined the trek to take these pictures.

Residents of Waitotara were in for a big surprise when they went down to the beach on Saturday.

Late Friday or early Saturday morning a 22.3m-long whale washed up on Waiinu beach, about 1.5km south of the Waitotara River mouth, north of Wanganui. Readers sent in the following pictures

A warm Wanganui welcome greeted the fleet of 40 minis and their owners in the 2011 Pork Pie Charity run on Saturday. The movie celebrates its 30th birthday this year and the 2011 Pork Pie Charity Run is raising money for Starship Children's Hospital.

Whanganui UCOL students entered the Royal Opera House as graduands and emerged as graduates. After the 1pm ceremony the students and their families took their graduation processional walk down Maria Place, into Victoria Ave, along Ridgway St, down Drews Ave and into Rutland St to Matapihi o Te Ao campus where they celebrated their learning success. New Zealand Jetpro jetsprint championshiop Wanganui

The roar of powerful engines, flying spray and the risk of a spill drew people from all over New Zealand to a Parapara farm on Saturday. As many as 3000 people of all ages went to the Murray farm, near Upokongaro, for Round 5 of the New Zealand Jetsprint Championships. The event was a success - despite a couple of crashes and one person getting hurt.

Eides Sport Surf Fishing Contest

Conditions couldn't have been better for a day fishing at the beach for the annual Eides Sports $40,000 Surf Fishing competition on Sunday. There were fishing poles for as far as the eye could see along South Beach, stretching from the South Mole to the Whangaehu River. While not everyone managed to catch anything more than a bunch of weed, others reeled in sharks, stingray, snapper, crabs and kahawai.

There were gumboots galore at the 26th annual Taihape Gumboot Day on Saturday at Memorial Park. Wanganui Affco Imlay Triathlon

The annual Affco Imlay sprint triathlon turned 30 on Saturday, and by the look of it, there's plenty of running left in its legs. Competitors did a length of Wiritoa, cycled out to the upper reaches of Castlecliff, finishing at Kaierau, before running thourgh Springvaale, up Parsons St hill and back down again to Kaierau.
