Upwards of 30 inline hockey teams roll into Wanganui tomorrow for the annual New Zealand Inter-Regional Inline Hockey Championships at Jubilee Stadium.
Teams from the Northern, Central, Lower North and South Island will compete for the Inter-Regional Cup held for the past two years by the northern region.
Fred Ashworth, president of the Wanganui Lightning Inline Hockey Club, said the cup was won by the region with the most points from all grades. The grades range from under-12 to the teenage grades, under-21, masters, veterans, and senior men and women. There is also a junior women's grade.
"The Northern region has won the cup for the past two years, but before that the Lower North, of which we are a part, held it for three or four years.
"We [Lower North] will be competitive again this year. The Northern, Central and Lower North regions are pretty closely matched, while the South Island traditionally struggles because it does not generally field teams in all grades," Ashworth said.
