The Wanganui Rugby Union board was in session yesterday - and a Ranfurly Shield challenge to holders Taranaki is likely to be one of the outcomes of the meeting.
While there was no official word from the union, a bid for the celebrated Log o' Wood at Hawera - halfway between Wanganui and Taranaki's New Plymouth base - would be the preferred venue.
Wanganui have never held the shield and their most recent challenge ended in defeat at the hands of Southland in Invercargill last year.
There have also been suggestions that Horowhenua-Kapiti and King Country might issue challenges but, in terms of rugby strength, Wanganui would be at the head of that queue.
Taranaki could, of course, refuse to accept the game - though they would have to defend the Shield against the blue-and-blacks if Wanganui win the Meads Cup on October 8, as the cup holders earn a mandatory challenge.
