An exhibition of two artists studying two different strands of nature in simple tones of black and white opens at the Quirky Fox Gallery in Hawera.
Gallery owner Vicki Fox said each artist had carefully portrayed the strength and fragility of life, whether it is a drawing of an intricate teasel or the stippled portrayal of the mighty cape buffalo.
South Taranaki local and emerging artist Rachelle Sutherland uses thousands upon thousands of dots carefully built up over a minimum of 100 hours per piece to create highly-detailed mammals.
Fox said Rachelle is a self-taught artist who has worked in several techniques and mediums before focusing on the time-intensive technique of stippling.
"Parallels with Nature" will be Rachelle's debut exhibition, she said.
The second artist, Jenny Haslimeier, is a highly-acclaimed emerging artist who splits her time between Scotland and New Zealand.
"She produces works that reflect the botanical world around her. Working in pencil and ink, Jenny has received a number of medals and commendations for her works since completing a Diploma of Botanical Illustration with distinction in 2016."
Fox said the ink originals Jenny had produced for the exhibition were a study in fine detail, transforming lines and dots into elegant plant forms.
The works the two artists have produced show how each species has both strength and vulnerability while also showing how a small dot or line out of place can alter the balance of this innovative exhibition.
Parallels with Nature opens Saturday, September 1 at the Quirky Fox on High St in Hawera.
