Ken Chernoff has been busy putting Whanganui on the map - the world jazz map that is, and it is coming together nicely.
In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day and Chernoff was disappointed to see no planned events in New Zealand for 2018.
"The website has a world map with flags showing where things will be happening and it was disappointing to see us not participating so I decided to do something about it."
Chernoff contacted New Zealand's foremost jazz impresario Rodger Fox who in turn recruited world-renowned jazz and blues organist Michel Benebig from New Caledonia and blues singer Erna Ferry to come to Whanganui.
"We needed a venue so I contacted Wanganui Collegiate's musical director, Richard Ellsworth, to see if the Prince Edward Auditorium might be a possibility."
