Dog control bylaws need to be tightened, says Wanganui District Council member Jack Bullock, and he is looking to the public to speak out about roaming dogs.
"It is a concern when we've got people scared to walk to the dairy because of stray, roaming, aggressive dogs," he said yesterday. "I hear a lot of it when I go out into the community and I think it is coming to a head."
His comments follow two dog attacks reported in the Chronicle this week, one involving a a cat being killed and one in which an elderly woman was bitten.
Readers have also raised the issue of the prevalence of roaming dogs during the past week.
Mr Bullock said he wanted to take a lead on the matter and would be pushing for change when dog control bylaws came up for review in the coming months.
