WAIKATO 55 CANTERBURY 23
Waikato took out its second straight NPC title last night, walloping Canterbury 55-23 at Mystery Creek in Hamilton.
Canterbury started as favourites for the match but Waikato attacked from the outset to ensure the southerners were never really in the hunt.
Waikato centre Jenny-May Coffin dominated play in mid-court, feeding the circle and offering strong defence at the other end.
A first quarter Waikato lead of 17-6 had grown to 29-11 by half-time, and at 42-16 going into the final fifteen minutes Canterbury were staring down a barrel.
Canterbury's defence trio of Vilimaina Davu, Belinda Charteris and Anna Veronese were hard pressed to stop Waikato's sharp shooters Julie Kelman-Poto, Renee Jacobsen and Noeline Taurua.
Kelman-Poto netted 37 from 49, Jacobsen 12 from 19 and Taurua six from eight.
Meanwhile Waikato defenders Leigh Price and Karen Pickard were too strong for the Canterbury frontline.
Manukau pipped Southland 52-50 in the play-off for third and fourth place yesterday.
