A call has gone out from leaders of two of the country's largest churches for prayers for Nelson Mandela today.

Anglican and Catholic services will include mentions of the former president of South Africa, who's still in hospital in Pretoria.

Bishop Ross Bay will offer his thoughts at Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral today.

"We're hoping that people will take that sense of prayer away from services, and carry it with them through the days and the weeks ahead."
