Kiwi sav blancs to grace the Queen's wine cellar

By Amelia Wade

Two New Zealand wines have been deemed fit for a queen - the Queen of England in fact.

In a recent blind taste-test, the Royal Household Wine Committee acknowledged the love of sauvignon blanc and bought 840 bottles.

The committee selected 40 cases of Villa Maria Estate's private bin sauvignon blanc and 30 cases of Palliser Estate Wine's Pencarrow sauvignon blanc 2010 for inclusion in Her Majesty's 5000-bottle wine cellar.

Villa Maria spokeswoman Chantelle Harper said it was an honour to be included.

She said New Zealanders could sip the same wine as the royal households, as the sauvignon blanc could be bought locally for up to $20 a bottle.

Royal Household Wine Committee member Jancis Robinson said the wines would be served at more than 300 events held each year at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

Last week, the Villa Maria wine was served at the British Film and Television Awards to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and film stars.
