Power lines downed by strong wind

Gusts have brought down power and phone lines as much-needed rain fell in parts of the North Island.

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the rain had caused a few minor road accidents, but most of the weather damage today was caused by the wind.

"Quite a few powerlines have been down and arcing ... it's really just the odd powerline and telephone wires brought down by the wind."

Mr Phillips said the gusts had brought down powerlines in Waimamaku in the Far North and New Lynn in west Auckland, where the downed lines were causing sparks.

A transformer had also fallen from powerlines in Matakana north of Auckland.

In south Auckland, the wind brought down phone lines in Otara and Manurewa.

Firefighters were also called to a leaking roof in Manurewa and a fallen pine tree in Otahuhu.
