Go on give hoops a whirl

Those looking for a new spin on getting fit should head along to Queen Elizabeth Park on Monday.

The Open Soul Collective is hosting a free hula hooping fitness class run by hooping enthusiast Lucy Cooper.

The session kicks off at 7pm at the grass area next to the playground and is open to all levels, including absolute beginners.

Ms Cooper said: "Even if you think you can't hula hoop, chances are you will be able to by the end of the session."

The class will use weighted hoops and begin with waist hooping and progress to body hooping.

"We'll finish up with some tricks so people will be able to go home and say that they can join the circus," Ms Cooper said.

The exercise was good for upper body strength, core strength, posture and mental health, she said.

Hula hooping always helped to improve her mood, she said.

"I go out and think I'll just do five minutes and one hour later I'm still going."

It was also a fun group activity.

"There's nothing like hooping with a group of people."

Participants are welcome to bring their children and a koha would be appreciated.

Hoops will be available to borrow on the night or you can bring your own.
