A woman was stabbed in the arm during a fight in the street with another woman in Masterton on Tuesday night.

Detective senior sergeant Scott Miller said police received a call around 8pm and discovered ambulance staff outside a Bannister Court address attending a woman in her twenties who was bleeding profusely from a stab wound on the back of her arm.

He said she was taken to Wairarapa Hospital and transferred to Wellington in the early hours of the morning in a stable condition.

Mr Miller said another woman has been arrested and will appear in court this week.

He said police have conducted interviews with residents and a scene examination but would welcome more information.

"Obviously, anyone in Bannister Court, we would be interested in speaking with them."

He said it was not a party situation and the street was known as "quite a quiet street".
