Expect sun but it may rain

Party animals are being advised to keep an eye on the weather while making plans to celebrate the New Year, although the forecast is looking sunny for the last night of the year.

MetService meteorologist John Law said New Year weather in Wairarapa was predicted to be pretty dry and pretty warm.

"With four days to New Year's Day, there's still some uncertainty in the timing of troughs in the westerlies crossing New Zealand," Mr Law said.

"So if you're planning outdoor activities for around that time, it will be important to keep up-to-date with the latest MetService forecasts and any watches or warnings."

Martinborough's La De Da New Year's Festival organiser Josh Mossman said they were prepared for any sort of weather.

"We're confident there's not going to be rain," he said.

"It will be great it there's sunshine."

He said a big difference this year is that the electronic stage is under a massive marquee, which means there will be plenty of shade if it's sunny and plenty of shelter if not.

In case the weather does turn, Mitre 10 Martinborough retail manager BJ Parker said they have plenty of gumboots and ponchos for festival-goers this year.

He said they haven't ordered as much stock as last year, but there was enough to help all those people who had come unprepared.

"Ponchos always sell out, regardless of the event," he said.

Mr Parker said they had received some feedback about the site being littered with gumboots, sleeping bags and tents last year, and hoped this new year people would take more care disposing of unwanted items.

The Metservice expected Masterton to reach a high of 22C today although it was predicted to be cloudy with light showers.

Tomorrow's forecast is for a high of 27C with drizzle in the morning, and Sunday is to be cloudy with a high of 26C.

A sunny last day of the year is expected but it is expected to rain on New Year's Day.
