Reader's Digest has produced a book called Quick fixes clever tips - practical solutions to everyday problems around the house ($64.80, plus postage and handling) for the home handyman.
It is a particularly user-friendly publication.
The pages are in a ring binder to keep the book open at the appropriate page while following instructions, which are liberally illustrated with diagrams and step-by-step photographs.
Subject matter is grouped into chapters, and an index assists the reader's search for help.
The chapters cover interior and exterior improvements; windows and doors; painting and wallpapering; furniture repairs and refurnishing; plumbing and electrical repairs and improvements; heating and cooling; appliance repairs and electronics; stone, brick and concrete; backyard and garden, and safety and security.
At the back is a guide to hardware materials and products which outlines the types, properties and proper use of nails, screws, nuts and bolts, hinges, latches, locks, timber, masonry, cement, adhesives, sealants, fillers, glass and abrasives.
It also has a list of recycling tips.
