Artists are battling to keep their works looking fresh at an edible art contest in Auckland.
Auckland University of Technology art and design students have entered 19 creations in the Ernest Adams Edible Art awards. The works are on display in the Aotea Centre until Sunday.
Ernest Adams product manager Justine Grebenar said some sculptures had been treated with varnish, lacquer and even hairspray to prevent decay, while others would look quite different by the time the exhibition closed.
A wall made of cake sponge had already lost some of its height since being erected on Monday, and would continue to shrink as the cake deteriorated.
Visual art student Allan Gough won the first prize of $2000 for Three Kete, three different-sized baskets woven from raw pastry, accompanied by a text about the pride taken by Maori chiefs in giving feasts.
He said he had chosen the baskets for their traditional association with Maori cooking.
Mrs Grebenar, one of the five judges, said Mr Gough's entry was "a single-minded concept that was beautifully executed, with intricate workmanship."
Second place went to Lauren Williamson, a graphic art student, for a field of poppies made of ginger kisses filled with brightly coloured icing.
