Hurdling star Rand has been sold for what is believed to be the highest price for a jumper from New Zealand.
Connections will say only that it is a six-figure sum, but one jumping racing identity said it was clearly the highest price for a New Zealand jumper.
When it was mentioned that Waikato horseman Ken Browne had sold one of his horses earlier this year for $200,000, the identity said Rand's price would be well in excess of that.
Manawatu part-owner Lloyd Clark said a contract for the sale of Rand had been completed before Wednesday's $40,000 Grand National Hurdles in which the horse took his unbeaten hurdling record to five.
Transfer of ownership also took place on Wednesday, according to Clark, but he wanted to wait until the money had been received.
The buyer is Eamon Cleary who lives in Auckland but who also spends time working in Ireland, according to associate David Burke.
Burke, manager of Highview Stud in Hamilton, said Cleary was an entrepreneur mainly involved in pin-hooking which is buying horses to sell for a profit.
