When architects Lucy Treep and Graham Burgess and their two preschoolers Bella and Seymour moved to Grey Lynn from a city apartment, outdoor space for entertaining and playing was high on their list of priorities.
Today, 10 years on, there is a constant flow between indoors and outdoors for much of the year. Sylvia, their third child, spends much of her time at home in the garden, Lucy Treep says.
The couple designed the house and garden together, and this prompted Lucy to concentrate on landscape design instead of architecture.
"People tend to be much more relaxed and adventurous with their landscaping than with the design of their home," she says.
"I really enjoy that freedom to be creative."
The couple's garden has a small lawn surrounded on three sides by Lucy's beloved aloes, and a courtyard dominated by a dramatic three-metre-high pergola next to the dining area. She paved the courtyard with a pebble mosaic.
In summer, the swings hanging from the pergola are often pulled to the side or flipped over the top so the dining table can be moved outdoors.
Here comes summer
