Germany's under-20 side look the odds-on favourites to emulate their senior side and lift the World Cup following a third comfortable victory on Sunday.
Germany finished clear on top of Group F on nine points and a goal difference of +14 following a 5-1 thrashing of Honduras at Christchurch Stadium. They opened the scoring early when Levin Oeztunali was brought down in the box by Honduran defender Carlos Moncada in the opening minute. Marc Stendera slotted home the penalty for his fourth goal of the tournament and second from the penalty spot.
Despite the horror start Honduras hit back with a scorching volley from Bryan Rochez - his third goal of the tournament - which rebounded off Germany keeper Schwabe and into his own goal. Rochez went close with another volley minutes later, just going wide. From then on it was all Germany.
Julian Brandt finished off some slick passing to put Germany back in the lead in the 30th minute.
Germany took total control of the second half. First Hany Mukhtar scored from a direct free kick before Grischa Proemel and then Niklas Stark got on the scoresheet to make it 5-1.
With the game and the second round already out of reach it got worse for Honduras when Jhonatan Paz was sent off in the 79th minute for a second yellow.
Germany remain in Christchurch for Thursday's second round match against the second ranked team in Group E, most likely Hungary or Nigeria.
