Spruce up for iconic toy wall

By Erika Venter

Eltham Lions and students from years 4, 5 and 6 at Eltham Primary got creative with toys and cement last Thursday, giving the town's toy wall a facelift.

The wall originated in the 1970s when Fay Young started decorating her boundary wall with toys left by children. Community members donated toys to the collection and the wall is now a popular visitors' destination, says Eltham Lions secretary Joyce Lawrence.

The wall tells a story of the toys children have played with over the decades. Some toys disappeared and others were broken off, which is why they are giving the wall a spruce-up, says Joyce.

The new toys were donated by the community. The Lions now owns the property, renting out the house.
