A SURVEY published by the NZ Herald shows many of us would be happy to have a person with a mental condition join our sports club, but we would be less inclined to invite them home for dinner.
The situation outlined perhaps more extreme than most - a person with schizophrenia - which might make one pause, as opposed to bipolar or anxiety conditions.
The survey aims to show that prejudice in New Zealand towards those with mental conditions exists to a significant degree.
The findings come as no surprise to me.
I have read among my journalism forums the lament of a trained journalist who can't find work because of his condition, despite a substantial subsidy provided from the government to the employer who hires him.
