The prospect of more and faster freight trains during the day has safety officials in West Auckland and Rodney worried.
From Sunday, Tranz Rail is changing its schedules to give a round-the-clock service.
In the past few years, pedestrians and motorists who regularly cross the line to Northland have become used to few freight trains and those mostly at night. But from Sunday trains could run as often as every two hours. They will also travel at 80 km/h instead of the present 50 km/h.
Waitakere City councillor Derek Battersby, who can recall three deaths on a New Lynn crossing in the past few years, hopes to meet local MPs today to discuss the problem.
