A 66-year-old woman was bashed and sexually violated for an hour in her retirement flat in Three Kings, police say.
The woman woke about 6 am on Sunday when she heard noises in her lounge.
She went to investigate and was confronted by a man.
The offender forced her into her bedroom and sexually violated and assaulted her for the next hour.
The woman lives alone in the Auckland City Council flat.
The attack has shocked the mainly elderly residents in the compound. Two elderly men who live either side of the victim both told the Herald they heard nothing until the arrival of the police.
The woman has described her attacker as a Polynesian in his mid- to late-30s, between 178cm and 184cm tall, of athletic build with short, close-cropped hair and a thin moustache.
Police say some items are missing from the flat.
The officer in charge of the case, Detective Sergeant Todd Pearce of Balmoral, said the attack was "bloody disgraceful."
"It's bad enough that a woman has her home invaded, but to suffer indignities at the hands of her invader is something else again," Detective Sergeant Pearce said.
The police want anyone who might have seen a man acting suspiciously in the Landscape Rd area of Three Kings to call the Balmoral police station on (09) 631 1020.
