Samoa could finally have its first ever Olympic medal, eight years after the fact.

It was announced overnight that 11 weightlifters face being stripped of their medals from the Beijing Olympics after failing retests of their doping samples.

Two of the weightlifters likely to be stripped of their medals are the silver and bronze medallists in the women's 75kg+ event, Olha Korobka of Ukraine and Mariya Grabovetskaya from Kazakhstan.

Samoa's golden girl Ele Opeloge finished a heartbreaking fourth in that event, missing bronze medal by a mere one kg behind Grabovetskaya.

But she could now be elevated to the silver medal pending a final ruling.
