Rio Olympics 2016: Michael Phelps now has even more golds than Mexico

After winning his 20th and 21st Olympic gold medals, Michael Phelps has equalled another country's total medal haul.

Phelps won the 200m butterfly and was part of the USA's victorious 4 x 200m freestyle team.

He was already ahead of the total tallies of countries including Argentina, Jamaica, North Korea and Mexico.

Today's double gold brings him alongside Ethiopa.

He has three more events and victories in those would give him 24 golds, one more than the total achieved in Olympic history by Brazil and South Africa.

New Zealand has 42 golds.
