New Zealand tennis No 1 Marina Erakovic has been defeated in the second round of the US$740,000 Carlsbad, California Premier WTA event overnight. (NZT)
Erakovic lost to the second seed and world No 14 Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-4 in one hour 26 minutes.
The Kiwi served 10 aces, but also had six double faults and was only able to convert one of her five break-point opportunities on Cibulkova's serve, while the Slovak was able to convert four from seven on Erakovic's serve.
Ranked at 47 in the world Erakovic will now travel to London for the Olympics.
Meanwhile, in the doubles draw of the US$50,000 Challenger in Binghampton, New York, Dan King-Turner and French partner, Gleb Sakharov have been beaten in the first round of doubles by Brit Jamie Baker and American Clinton Harrison 6-3 7-6(3).
However, King-Turner is in the quarter-finals of the singles where he will play Rhyme Williams.
Fellow Kiwi Michael Venus and his partner reached the quarter-finals of the doubles at Binghampton before eventually losing to Adrien Bossel (Switzerland) and Michael McClune (United States) 7-6(3) 6-4.
In Belgium at the 42,500 euro Challenger Grez-Doiceau, another New Zealand player, Artem Sitak has made it through to the doubles semifinals.
Sitak and Dutchman, Tomas Schoorel beat the Argentine fourth seeds Maximo Gonzalex and Diego Junqueira 6-3 6-3 in the quarterfinals and will now play another team from Argentina Facundo Bagnis and Pablo Galdon.
At the US$10,000 Futures in Felixstowe, Britain, Marcus Daniell has made the semifinals of the singles tournament.
He defeated Brit Joshua Ward-Hibbert 6-1 3-6 7-6(3) in his quarterfinal and will now play another local, Tom Burn for a place in the final.
